WWII - British women on the Home Front
During WWII, British women were encouraged to volunteer for essential work so that men could join the armed forces. On the 'Home Front' they rationed, grew gardens, recycled and worked in factories.
They learned skills needed to meet the growing demands of wartime production involved in metal and chemical industries, munitions and vehicle manufacture. Later in the war women were conscripted for service.
