US Navy WAVE Poster
WWII created a growing demand for persons available for work, including women. WAVES were an official division of the Navy for women, whose members received ranks and pay equivalent to male personnel. Waves (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) performed a variety of roles from ship's cook to radioman.
