Chemical and biological weapons in WWII
British soldiers carried gas masks during World War II in case of a gas attack. Gas warfare had been used during World War I so its use was expected again in WWII.
Civilians were also given gas masks for protection, including children who carried a gas mask in a box to school.
Both Allied and Axis powers developed chemical and biological weapons during WWII, but throughout the entire war, only the Japanese used them against soldiers. Germans, however, used gas to kill prisoners in "concentration camps".
