Food shortages in Britain
At the time Great Britain entered WWII it was importing much of its food and oil. Nazi Germany began attacking British ships in an effort to shut down Britain's industry and starve the nation into submission.
As shortages became extreme, Great Britain instituted rationing and recycling, and encouraged the public to grow small home vegetable gardens called "Victory Gardens".
British WWII poster: "every available piece of land must be cultivated. Grow your own food. Supply your own cookhouse."
