Dornier 18 German bomber and reconnaissance flying-boat, WWII.

Dornier 18

The Dornier 18 flying-boat was used mainly for reconnaissance during WWII. It was initially developed for Deutsche Lufthansa as a long-range flying boat to replace the Dornier Wal and was introduced in 1935. It was of all-metal construction and skin, except for fabric covered wings. In March 1938, a DO 18 W established a record of flying non-stop (5,214 miles) from Start Point, Devon to Caravelas in Brazil.

The Do 18D was the first military version and was later replaced by variants with more powerful engines and heavier armament. A Dornier 18 was the first plane to fall to British aircraft during WWII, being shot down over the North Sea. Approximately 170 were built.
