LST (Landing ship tank)
The LST was a naval vessel which transported vehicles, supplies, and troops to shore during World War II. It was designed to fill the need for an ocean going ship to move tanks to beaches. Over 1000 were built. The LST 983 was commissioned March 25, 1944 and participated in the invasion of Normandy June 6 - June 25, 1944. The first operation of the LST required changing the 18th century language governing the U.S. Navy. "He who doth suffer his ships to founder on rocks and shoals shall be punished".
