Landing on Juno Beach
The British 2nd Army: Commandos of Headquarters, 4th Special Service Brigade, making their way from LCI(S)s (Landing Craft Infantry Small) onto "Nan Red" Beach, Juno area, at St. Aubin-sur-Mer, June 6, 1944.
Note the motorized scooter at the base of the ramp in the center of the photo. A second scooter is at the top of the ramp. Finally note the bicycle at the top of the farthest right ramp. The bicycles were intended to allow the commandos to reach targets far inland on the first day Operation Overlord. In practice, most of these bicycles were discarded as soon as these troops became engaged in combat. Source: IWMCollections IWM Photo No.: B 5218
